14 May – Post Fundraiser – VFW Post 406 will host the “Veterans Helping Veterans Fundraiser” on Wednesday, May 14th, from 6:00 PM- 9:00 PM at Brick Alley Pub, . Admission to the event is $20.00, and includes Hors d’oeuvres and a Cash Bar. During the event, we will conduct a silent auction of goods donated by local businesses, and possibly some additional raffles. In addition, Brick Alley Pub has also graciously offered to donate a portion of the bar proceeds to the post! All Funds Raised will Directly Support Veterans of Newport.
17 May – Newport Cemetery Grave Flagging – Post 406 will lead the effort to place American flags on Veteran graves in advance of Memorial Day as per custom. We will meet at Belmont Chapel within Island Cemetery and disburse in groups to place almost 1000 flags until completion. This event will be open to the public and various groups and is great for families, especially as a way to help our children understand the importance of honoring those who have given their lives for our country.
26 May – Strewing of Flowers -The Strewing of Flowers is a traditional maritime ceremony to remember and honor those lost at sea in service to our nation. Veterans, active military, the public, and their families are invited to join the post, reflect on the peril experienced by those serving at sea and those lost due to conflict and accident. As part of the ceremony, attendees will be asked to participate by casting flowers into Newport Harbor to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. This is held at Storer Park on Washington Street in Newport.
26 May – Newport City Hall Memorial Day Ceremony – VFW Post 406 & American Legion Post 7 invite the public to attend a Memorial Day Ceremony at noon at Newport City Hall to honor and reflect on the sacrifices of local Newport men and women who have served our Nation. Newport has served a role in all of our Nation’s wars, from the American Revolution through the Global War on Terror. We gather at City Hall as monuments remembering those who lost their lives during World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam are clustered on the lawn.
