VFW Post 406’s own Junior Vice Commander Sharon McGinnis was highlighted after traveling to Michigan to play golf in the Veterans Golf Association tournament at the American Dunes Golf Club. They were so impressed with her that they highlighted her in their own newsletter, copied below. Congratulation Sharon and thanks for continuing to serve Veterans and our community!
Good Saturday Morning. This past week our fantastic weather continued as the 1st full week of June has been terrific. One “glitch in the matrix” was yesterday, Friday. The rain moved in about two hours after the first tee time, and it never stopped. Light rain turned “to heavy rain” and then that turned “heavier” for most of the day. Yes, it was one of those rare wash out style of days, but many of our players took it in stride, waited for it to lighten up and then headed out to enjoy and make the best of it. Some ventured to local pubs off site to test their dart board skills and rest up for today when they arrive for another round.Looking back at the week though, we had many a guest from close by to half the country away. On Monday, we had a rare day hosting two outings, and AM and a PM event. The morning event was the return of the local Michigan Chapter of the VGA, The Veterans Golf Association. The day was CAVU clear and not a breath of wind, the perfect day to host some great men and women that have defended our freedoms around the world. One of these players was Retired US Army Captain Sharon McGinnis, a proud veteran of the 82nd Airborne. CPT McGinnis was stationed in Fort Hood and Fort Bragg and deployed overseas to Bosnia during her service. Hailing from the East Coast, Rhode Island to be exact, Sharon came across the country to see and play American Dunes. Last summer while attending the Ally Challenge Champions Tour event in Flint, MI as part of her company sponsoring the event, she ran into and chatted with Lt Col Dan Rooney. Inspired by their visit she read Dan’s book and vowed to one day make the trek to play American Dunes. She noticed the VGA event on our schedule and signed up.Spending some time with Sharon before and after her round, we had a chance to chat about her current support of veterans. She is active in VFW Post 406 in Newport, RI. Many may think of sailing and world cup events when you here Newport, but the rich US Naval history is there as well with the US Naval War College. Sharon ties these together by supporting our Gold Star Families via another wonderful organization, Gold Star Sailing. Check out their awesome work here at https://goldstarsailing.org/ and visit VFW Post 406 here to see some great history, https://vfw406ri.org/ and the wonderful things they do out east.Thank you Sharon for serving our country, defending our freedoms and for sharing with our team while visiting American Dunes. You traveled across the country to do so and were glad you had some added time to see the sites of Grand Haven on some “Chamber of Commerce Days”. |
