VFW Post 406 Newport celebrated Independence Day at the Bristol 4th of July Parade, the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration, dating back to 1785. Post member Chrystal Arel and Junior Vice Commander Sharon McGinnis joined National Commander-in-Chief Carol Whitmore at the parade.

The Independence Day celebrations continued on July 5th when Newport VFW Post 406, in partnership with the Newport Historical Society and Fort Adams Trust, held Veterans’ Appreciation Day at Fort Adams. The event featured remarks from our own Post Commander Anselm Richards, Senior Vice Commander Mark Turner and guest speaker VADM Howe (ret). Fort Adams hosted National Picnic Day and later a special performance by the Navy Band Northeast Trident Brass Quintet. This family friendly event was a model for how various community groups can come together to increase community bonds and civic engagement.
