VFW Post 406 Newport has a busy summer of events coming up. Please read below and spread the word to support our Post!
RI VFW 2026 State Convention – Saturday, June 20th
Each year, VFW leaders from every post, as well as state leadership, gather to hold elections for Officers for the coming year and make decisions to guide our overall efforts within the state. We have chosen 3 delegates who will formally represent the post, but this event can be attended by any member who wishes to see the bigger picture within the state. Be prepared to present you VFW Membership card (physical or digital) to be admitted.
This year’s convention will be held at Post 5392 in Tiverton, 134 Shove St, Tiverton, RI 02878.
The Convention will open at 0900 and end at approximately 1500, with a break for lunch between 1130 and 1230
Newport Gulls – Support Veterans Night, Monday, June 22nd
We are teaming up with the Newport Elks to serve as volunteers for the evening, and also to be included within the pregame activities to honor local Veterans. Several of our members are being honored with the opportunity to throw out the 1st Pitch, and all Veterans in attendance will be invited to be recognized on the field.
Our volunteer effort for the game will include serving as gate attendants (collecting tickets and welcoming attendees), and selling 50/50 raffle tickets as needed.
Time commitment is approx 1700 volunteer reporting (@ 3rd Base bleachers), 1830 game time, and through as long as you can stay.
Reduced-price tickets ($4 instead of the typical $8) are still available as well.
For tickets, and to confirm your availability to volunteer, please contact Kevin Callahan – cal02916@gmail.com / 401-864-9145
Please wear your Post polo / cap, and khaki shorts/pants.
AMERICA 250 – Veterans Day – Sunday, July 5th
As part of Newport’s celebration of America 250, a Veterans Appreciation event is being held on July 5th and will provide a day of food and activities to celebrate the service of Veterans.
Please put this in your calendar, and more details will follow.
July Post Business Meeting – Thursday, July 9th
Our next scheduled post-meeting will be on Thursday, July 9th at 1700.
Cemetery Flags Out – Saturday, July 11th
We will meet at 0900 (assuming the weather is dry) to collect and store all of the grave flags for re-use in November. Event should be complete by 1100.
We do this in order to avoid flags getting damaged and neglected through the summer months, and it is an important final step in our efforts to put flags out on Memorial Day.
Rain date will be Saturday, July 18th.
Gold Star Sailing – Closing Dinner, Friday, July 31st
We will support Gold Star Sailing again this year, with a combined dinner for campers, staff, post members, and USCG Station Castle Hill. Final time pending, but approximately 1800.
We will likely also hold our August Business Meeting immediately prior.
