The Newport City Council addressed a resolution sponsored by Councilor David Carlin to install a flagpole at Murphy Field in honor of Private Michael G. Murphy, a local veteran who lost his life during World War I. This initiative, led by VFW Post 406, aims to properly recognize Murphy’s contributions and ensure that his legacy is remembered by future generations. The council expressed its commitment to supporting this effort, highlighting the importance of honoring local heroes. Post 406 Commander Anselm Richards addressed the council, highlighting the importance of remembering local veterans and honoring their sacrifice. The flagpole will be lit and accompanied by a plaque in his honor. Post 406 hopes to replicate this success at other Newport public sites named for fallen veterans.
