The City of Newport celebrated Arbor Day on April 24th with the planting of a new Liberty Tree in a ceremony at William Ellery Park. It was hosted by the Newport Tree and Open Space Commission and Newport Historical Society. Honors were provided by the Newport Artillery Company, commanded by Post 406’s William Farrell. The tree was donated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Newport VFW Post 406 Commander Anselm Richards delivered remarks about the symbolism of nurturing a tree, much like Freedom must be vigilantly guarded or it will wither and die.
