On July 17th, the Newport Gulls hosted their annual Military Appreciation night for Active Military, Veterans and their families at Cardine’s Field. In addition to providing a great night of baseball (just a reminder they are the New England Collegiate Baseball League regular season champs!), the Newport Gulls organization recognized and honored many local military members and veterans during pre-game activities, calling particular attention to remember that 2023 is the 20th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War, as well as the 50th anniversary of the withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Vietnam in 1973.

VFW Post 406 members volunteered for the game, serving as gate attendants throughout the night.

During the game, our post members rallied the game attendees to sell $1048 worth of raffle tickets for the Gull’s 50/50 raffle – their largest pot of the year! One half of the pot went to a lucky fan, and the other was donated to Gold Star Sailing, a non-profit 501(c) volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing unique opportunities and adventures to the surviving children of fallen military service members in order to instill self-confidence, build character, teach teamwork, develop leadership, and promote healing in a positive environment of hope,  adventure, and friendship.  Gold Star Sailing will be holding a sailing camp in Newport, RI July 30th – August 5th.

Richard F. Keene, Brigadier General, USA, Retired and Joseph Kaiser, Command Sergeant Major USA Retired pick the winning ticket.
