Newport VFW Post 406 honors the memory of our deceased veterans and invites the public to our upcoming events.
- Veteran Grave flagging May 16th at 9:00 at Belmont Chapel in Island Cemetery Newport, entrance off Warner Street. Post 406 will lead the effort to place American flags on Veteran graves in advance of Memorial Day as per custom. We will meet at Belmont Chapel within Island Cemetery and disburse in groups to place almost 1000 flags until completion. This event will be open to the public and various groups and is great for families, especially as a way to help our children understand the importance of honoring those who have given their lives for our country.
- Strewing of Flowers Memorial Service May 25 at 10:30 am at Storer Park Newport, base of Goat Island Bridge. This moving ceremony invites the public to remember and honor service members from all branches of the U.S. military who were lost at sea during both peace and wartime. Participants will cast flowers into Newport Harbor against the backdrop of ceremonial water cannon arches by the US Coast Guard Castle Hill and Newport Fire Department.
- City Hall Memorial Service May 25 at 12:00 noon at Newport City Hall. VFW Post 406 & American Legion Post 7 honor and reflect on the sacrifices of local Newport men and women who have served our Nation. Newport has served a role in all of our Nation’s wars, from the American Revolution through the Global War on Terror. The Newport Artillery Company fires ceremonial volleys to start and end the remembrance ceremony.
