Newport VFW Post 406 led a group of dedicated post and community members at Island Cemetery to place American flags on Veteran graves in advance of Veterans Day as per custom. We were especially honored to have the help of active-duty Navy students from the Navy Supply Corps School here at Naval Station Newport. Despite the rain we had a large turnout and placed almost 1400 flags including 5 Medal of Honor recipients who are buried in Newport. This event is great for families, especially as a way to help our children understand the importance of honoring those who have given their lives for our country. This is a leading event prior to our solemn ceremony taking place on Veterans Day at Belmont Chapel at 10:00.
