VFW Post 406 was the lead organization for the Newport Gulls Military Appreciation night at Cardines Field. The pre-game ceremony started with an on-field parade of the Color Guard from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill. The first pitches were thrown out by representatives from all services, including Rear Admiral Darryl Walker, President of the U.S. Naval War College. Post 406 members provided the gate attendants and sold tickets for the 50/50 raffle, proceeds which are donated to Gold Star Sailing.
It’s important to note that the historic venue of Cardines Field was named after Italian immigrant and Newport resident Bernado Cardines who was killed in action in WWI. Post 406 was instrumental in renaming Cardines Field from Basin Field in his honor.
VFW Post 406 will support the Gulls once again on Monday July 27 for Veterans Night along with the Newport Elks.
