Dear Commander Richards,
On behalf of our community of veterans, their families, our Board of Trustees, and our staff here at the VFW National Home for Children, I welcome you to what is the fourth quarter of the year 2020. Although the first three quarters of this year have been confusing, chaotic, and somber for our nation, your generosity and support over these past months has brightened our hearts and spirits as we enter into the fourth quarter of this year. Upon reflection, I recalled that even after the dark day of September 11th, drenched in shock and sorrow, we rallied, we came together, as a nation, and as a people, we came together with one common purpose and one united resolve. We came out of those days, those dark days of uncertainty, stronger, wiser, and united. Today, we are again living in days of chaos and uncertainty. But I know history has taught us that we will leave the past three quarters behind us and show our American resolve emerging stronger, more united, and undaunted. For over 95 years, through darkness and light, tears, and smiles, our mission remains true. That would not, nor could not have been accomplished if it weren’t for the prayers, support, and generosity of the tens of thousands of members of the VFW and its Auxiliary. Your commitment, your commitment to our mission, is as alive today as it has ever been, a common purpose, one united resolve. So, we begin the fourth quarter of the year 2020 with the enthusiasm that you have given us.
You have positively impacted countless veterans, families, volunteers, and supporters of the VFW National Home for Children, many of whom you may never meet. Warren Buffett once said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Our mission is our road, and you, our guiding light.
