On Saturday, May 20th, members of VFW Post 406 and friends will gather to memorialize and honor Veterans that are buried in Newport cemeteries.

Every year in advance of Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, we visit the graves of previous generations of Veterans and recognize their service by placing a small American flag near their gravestone. Some of them became well-known and famous in their lifetimes, while others led simpler, quieter lives – but all served with honor and dignity, and we remember their service.

This is a family-friendly event, and a great way to help children learn how to appreciate the service and sacrifice of previous generations of Veterans.

We will gather together beginning at 8:30 AM in front of the Belmont Chapel in Island Cemetery. After allowing people time to arrive, we will disburse across multiple cemeteries in teams at 9:00 AM. The cemeteries that we flag are adjacent to each other, and Island Cemetery is central to all of them.

We will be placing flags in Island Cemetery, the Island Cemetery Annex, the Common Burial Ground, the Braman Cemetery, the North Burial Ground, St. Mary’s Cemetery, and the Friends Burial Ground.

We hope you can join us – please let us know by signing up below!

Directions: The main entrance to Island Cemetery is located at 30 Warner Street, Newport, RI 02840. Proceed through this entrance, and drive straight for a little less than a quarter mile, and you will see the chapel. Please park only on paved roadways!
